Golf is on the Way

Golf

Jessica‘s 1st golf season ended today with sixty strokes at The Pines Golf Course.

After two season’s of middle school volleyball Jess’ decided to make a go of golf. This seemed a natural move considering her Dutch roots and the Netherlands’ role as the inventor of golf.

The ball began rolling June 11, 2012 with an email from Mr. Tom Koert sent to, near as I can tell, nine parents.

“Dear  Parent;
        I am the Boys and Girls Varsity Golf coach at NPCHS.    We have a good girls team, but we are always looking to add a girl or two each year, to the program.    We have gone to the state finals five years in a row and that should continue.   Our home golf course is Kent C.C.   It is an elite golf course and it is an honor to be there.
        Would your daughter be interested in Girls’ Golf?    If your daughter has no experience, now is the time to encourage her and get her started with the game.   I teach the game and usually spend a good portion of the summer with the NP girls players.   I have a winter indoor site at my Church, and many use this site for winter practice.    We are looking to expand, adding a jv girls’ team this fall.    For any new girl, who I can work weekly with before the season begins, they can play golf this fall and not be overwhelmed.    In my 8 years, nearly every girl has come into our program without experience.    I was able to teach them during the summer and many were in the starting line-up, at the varsity level.   This year would be an exception as we are returning everyone from a good team last year.   I set up our fall schedule to get every girl into several events, getting experience for those needing the proper level of play.   All fall sports begin this August 8th and our first event is the 15th.
        If you are not aware, Girls Golf offers an easier opportunity to college scholarships than any other sport.   Two former NP girls are currently playing college golf with a scholarship of a minimum of 12k  a year.    My son was granted  106k  the past four years for college, and in FL.    He graduated a month ago, debt free.    On this current girls team, there are two girls, who are getting nice offers from colleges.   Another soph will easily go to college through golf, and pay very little to go.    In all other sports, it is very difficult to get to college through sports.   Not enough girls play HS golf, thus the shortage and opportunity.   In my 8 years, I’ve seen 7 NP students get 10k a year, or more from college golf, and I’ve seen a few more go to college, getting a smaller grant off tuition.
I truly hope you would encourage your daughter to try golf.   We have a lot of fun, learn how to play the right way, and enjoy the best weather with fall golf.    If you wish to discuss anything, please call me.    My cell is 690 – —-.   Thank you for your time.”

Then, on June 29 there was this follow-up in my inbox…

“I haven’t heard from you, but I hope your daughter will give golf and me a chance.   It is not an easy game, but if she waits until August, she might not stick with it.    I encourage her to start asap, so I can teach her.    During the winter at my Church facility, the time is free as we have a golf fund to provide to the kids.    But, waiting is not a good idea, as it would overwhelm most. “

After some phone tag she was swinging clubs on July 30. Little did I know this was to be the source of such a strong blessing.
